A live-action series based on Nintendo’s popular “Legend of Zelda” gaming franchise could be making its way to Netflix.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the streaming service is developing an original series inspired by and featuring characters from the gaming series, which follows a young elf named Link on his quest to save a princess named Zelda in their fictional world of Hyrule. Plans are still very much in the early stages, but Nintendo is said to be working closely with Netflix on the adaptation.
As the project moves forward at Netflix, it first needs a writer — so there is still a long way to go before any sort of “Zelda” series gets a commitment from the streaming service, per the report.
For Netflix, original series that cater to kids — as well as the passionate “fanboy” audience — continue to be an area of great focus. The company has wide-ranging original content deals with DreamWorks Animation and Marvel, as well as adaptations of “Magic School Bus” and “A Series of Unfortunate Events” in the works.
Netflix also plans to be in Japan, where Nintendo is headquartered, by the end of 2015.
