Vimeo has acquired exclusive first window, “download to own” rights in the US to “Going Clear,” a documentary film about Scientology and its supporters by Oscar- and Peabody-winning director Alex Gibney.
“Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief,” based on Pulitzer Prize-winner Lawrence Wright’s 2013 best-seller of the same name, profiles eight former members of the controversial church, exploring the psychological impact of blind faith and how the church attracts new followers and keeps its hold on a bunch of Hollywood A-list members. Unsurprisingly, it was one of the most talked-about films at Sundance this year.
And soon it will be on Vimeo, which will sell it via the transactional Vimeo On Demand service starting September 15. This will come after the film’s initial broadcast on HBO. The premium cable network’s HBO Documentary Films division is the film’s distributor in association with Sky Atlantic.
“Going Clear” was produced by Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions. The deal was concluded with Content Media Corporation, which is a partner company of Jigsaw’s.
