The streaming company is not providing any specific details about the project, except that it’s an eight-episode hour-long drama that will debut across all Netflix territories in 2016. Created by Marling and her creative partner Zal Batmanglij, all episodes will also be written by the duo, with Batmanglij directing and Marling starring.
“We are thrilled to be the home of the first television series Brit and Zal create together,” said Cindy Holland, VP of original content at Netflix, in a statement. “Whether in front of or behind the camera, or both, their creative voice is always uniquely captivating.”
Marling is best known for writing and starring in indie films such as “Sound of My Voice” and “The East,” both of which were co-written and directed by Batmanglij, and “Another Earth,” which was co-written and directed by Mike Cahill.
“The OA,” which is a Netflix production, will be executive produced by Marling and Batmanglij, alongside Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner of Plan B (“12 Years a Slave”) and Michael Sugar of Anonymous Content (“True Detective,” “The Knick”).
