As Vessel finally opens its doors to the unsuspecting consumer public today, the short-form video distribution platform has wrangled a heavier stable of first window exclusives, premium programmers, and individual creators, including GloZell Green, Tré Melvin, Meredith Foster aka Stilababe, and Meghan Rienks a.k.a. MeghanRosette. Even gamers like SeaNanners, Syndicate, Mr Sark, and WroetoShaw have ventured to Vessel bringing their videos first to Vessel before other platforms. Phil DeFranco’s “The Vloggity,” episodes of TestTube’s “Scam School,” and “Shots of Awe” will premiere first on Vessel, via a deal with Discovery Communications.
And premiering today, Machinima is bringing the fifth season of its hit animated series “Battlefield Friends” exclusively to the Vessel library. The most-watched series on Machinima’s popular animated comedy programming block, Happy Hour, “BFF” is set in the world of an online multiplayer war zone and follows a cast of players who are forced to deal with having worst player in the world on their team. Season five will include 13 episodes, each of which will live on Vessel for seven days exclusively before arriving on YouTube.
Previous seasons of “Battlefield Friends” have hit upwards of 2 million views on average per episode. Should Vessel accumulate even a fraction of that alongside the 200 million passionate fans, and their tens of billions of video views in the past year alone (stat provided by Vessel reps), then we could see the company start moving the needle in a big way, both for the creators who are getting up front guarantees and for the industry at large.
Vessel is also banking on its syndication relationships, which will operate under the ad-supported, free model of the product. The newest partners to sign on include NBCUniversal, which will make clips from late-night programs “The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon” and “Late Night with Seth Meyers” available on Vessel the day after they air. The NBA will make short-form game recaps of most games available on Vessel, and Universal Sports and Fox Sports are also on board.
