Lakeshore Entertainment wants to reach the YouTube generation.
The production studio, behind movies such as the Oscar-winning “Million Dollar Baby,” has launched Off the Dock, a digital outfit that will finance, produce, acquire, and distribute digital “influencer-led” films.
“We are excited to blend Lakeshore’s knowledge and skills gained from its 20-year track record of traditional filmmaking and distribution with the new world of digital influencers,” said Lakeshore CFO Marc Reid in a statement. “We think each world can elevate the other.”
The first project for the new studio is “Man Up,” a feature comedy written and directed by Justin Chon (“Twilight”), and starring Chon and Kevin Wu. Chon and Wu are both prominent stars, with the former reaching more than 215,000 subscribers and the latter, better known as KevJumba, has more than 3 million.
“Man Up” centers on two 19-year-old best friends whose lives are twisted when one of them unexpectedly becomes a father. The film is produced by Kinetic Films. Lakeshore and Off the Dock have partnered with Supergravity Pictures, a film production and distribution company founded by Max Benator and Marc Hustvedt, to distribute the film in North America across digital platforms. Lakeshore is handling international distribution.
