The feature film stars the Defy-owned Smosh duo Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox along with fellow YouTubers Jenna Marbles, Grace Helbig, Harley Morenstein, Mark Fischback (aka Markplier), and Dominic “D-Trix” Sandoval. “Traditional” talent in the movie includes “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Michael Ian Black. It follows the Smosh duo’s adventures “through the YouTube portal” as they attempt to get rid of an embarrassing video of Padilla before his love interest can watch it.
The debut will consist of a screening in Anaheim, California, strategically located by YouTube talent convention VidCon. “With so many loyal fans expected at this year’s VidCon event, where we will also celebrate Smosh’s ten year anniversary, we couldn’t think of a better place to debut the movie,” said Defy Media CEO, Matt Diamond.
Added CEO and founder of AwesomenessTV, Brian Robbins, “With ‘Smosh: The Movie,’ we are going to build upon what we learned from the release of ‘Expelled’…[which] debuted at the top of the iTunes charts.” “Expelled” stars Vine/YouTube star Cameron Dallas.
Eric Falconer wrote “Smosh: The Movie,” which was directed by Alex Winter. It was executive produced by Barry Blumberg, Brett Bouttier, Joe Davola, Shauna Phelan, Padilla, and Hecox. Brians Robbins produced. It was shot, in part, at YouTube Space LA.
After its initial theatrical release, “Smosh: The Movie” will show up on various digital HD and VOD platforms.
