Amazon has named former Disney/ABC digital chief Albert Cheng chief operating officer of its Amazon Studios unit, which oversees the company’s original video programming business.
As COO, Cheng will oversee the division’s efforts across all business operations and software development, Amazon said. He was most recently at Disney/ABC Television Group, where he served as EVP and chief product officer of digital media and was responsible for bringing a lot more Disney and ABC content to digital platforms.
In addition to Cheng, Amazon Studios has hired Bob Berney from indie film marketing and distribution company Picturehouse. As head of movies distribution and marketing, Berney will be responsible for overseeing distribution and marketing for all “Amazon Original Movies.”
Earlier this year, Amazon announced plans to start producing, acquiring, and distributing original feature-length films. Unlike its rival Netflix, however, Amazon Studio is eyeing a distribution model that places theatrical ahead of its digital platform.
