Actor Jaden Smith, son of hip-hop legend Will Smith, is joining “The Get Down,” a new musical-drama series for Netflix from Baz Luhrmann.
Smith will play the role of Marcus “Dizzee” Kipling, described as a psychedelically talented and enigmatic graffiti artist raised in South Bronx. He joins a diverse cast that includes Jimmy Smits, Justice Smith, Shameik Moore, Yahya Abdul-Mateen, Mamoudou Athie, and Herizen Guardiola.
“The Get Down,” a passion project for Luhrmann that he has been working on for more than a decade, is set in 1970s New York City and will focus on the music scene, one that exploded as the city faced particularly tough economic times.
Spanning 13 episodes, the series is set to debut across all Netflix territories in 2016. It comes from Luhrmann, Shawn Ryan, and Sony Pictures Television, and is executive produced by Luhrmann, Ryan, Catherine Martin, Paul Watters, Thomas Kelly, Stephen Adley Guirgis, and Marney Hochman.
On screen, Smith is best known for roles in movies such as “The Karate Kid” reboot, “After Earth,” and “The Pursuit of Happyness.”
