Former Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter’s digital media venture, The Players’ Tribune, has closed a Series B round for $9.5 million.
Launched earlier this year, The Players’ Tribune is distinctive — outside of the fact that it was launched by one of the most popular athletes in America — for its focus on “first-person” content created — or at least dictated — by athletes. Its roster includes a community of more than 100 pro and amateur athletes including Jeter, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, Cleveland Cavaliers power forward Kevin Love, among others.
Available at ThePlayersTribune.com, the company also has a partnership in place with AOL to produce and distribute original video content.
The new funds will support the continued creation and distribution of this content across all formats, from editorials to podcasts to video. The Series B will also be used to expand the company’s production and business staff, with an eye toward platform growth and broader content distribution.
As part of the financing, NEA general partner Jon Sakoda will join The Tribune’s board of directors.
