John Lithgow, Matt Smith, and Claire Foy have landed lead roles in the upcoming Netflix original series “The Crown.”
The historical drama will follow the reign of Queen Elizabeth II across multiple decades, and shine a light on the relationship between the monarchy and government of England throughout the 20th century.
Lithgow is on board as Sir Winston Churchill, while Foy and Smith will play the Queen and Philip Mountbatten, the Duke of Edinburgh, respectively.
Inspired by the play “The Audience” by Peter Morgan, the series is produced by Left Bank Pictures and Sony Pictures Television, and is written by Morgan with Stephen Daldry directing. Executive producers include Morgan, Daldry, Robert Fox, Matthew Byam Shaw, and Andy Harries, who worked with Morgan on the critically acclaimed feature “The Queen.”
The first season, which will span 10 hour-long episodes, will premiere across all Netflix territories in 2016.
