Meerkat now offers an embeddable video player, which the live-streaming video app plans to use with the Discovery Channel in time for Shark Week, which starts on July 5. Discovery will embed Meerkat streams of shark content on SharkWeek.com, including stories from experts on the finned creatures and conservationists, whose talks will line up with whatever the Discovery Channel is broadcasting during the time of the live-stream. Though these streams will come from Discovery’s account on the app, others are invited to stream on Meerkat about sharks during their tentpole week using the hashtag #sharkweek. Meerkat doesn’t allow for replays, so you’ll have to catch the live shark content when it’s playing.
The International Olympic Committee announced that European TV and multi-platform broadcast rights for the 2018 through 2024 Olympic Games have been given to Discovery Communications, Eurosport’s parent company. Discovery Communications CEO and president David Zaslav said that the deal will “enhance Eurosport’s presence on all platforms” and entail delivering “record amounts of content across platforms.” Olympic content will appear on the web and mobile devices across 50 territories in Europe via Eurosport Player, DPlay, Eurosport.com, and Eurosport 360.
Matthew Sontoro, the YouTube creator known for his listicle-style, fact-driven videos, has made a book deal with Penguin. Called “Mind=Blown,” the book will feature facts and tales covering areas like science, technology, history, and space, and it will come out in August 2016. Currently, Santoro has over 4 million subscribers on YouTube. He’s signed with Collective Digital Studio.
