It wasn’t enough for Michelle Phan to have her own global lifestyle network (Icon) and her own makeup subscription service (ipsy), she also had to get into the comic book business. On Monday, the YouTube star announced that she will debut her first digital comic “The Enchantress” on LINE Webtoon in the fall of 2015.
“Most people think of me as a makeup guru, but might be surprised to know I’m also a trained artist and a huge comic book fan,” said Phan (pictured, below) in a statement. “’The Enchantress’ is my passion project that has been brewing since I was 11, and I’m so excited to finally pursue this dream of mine.”
Told in 26 chapters, “The Enchantress” is set in a near-future world, where the landscape has been destroyed by technology. A young songstress of divine origin slowly awakens her true powers, aided by her guardian BeBo (pictured, top), a master alchemist, who must convince her to let him guide her toward her destiny.
LINE Webtoon launched worldwide in July 2014. It is a spin-off of a South Korean webtoon platform created in 2004 by Naver, one of the country’s top web search portals. More than 48% of LINE Webtoon users are female, and the platform is looking to work with more female creators, including those, like Phan, who don’t have traditional comic backgrounds. The company expects to announce additional collaborations in the coming months.
In the meantime, Phan will be promoting “The Enchantress” with an appearance on LINE Webtoon’s panel “The Future of Comics in a Digital World” at Comic-Con International: San Diego on July 10.
