Kiliaen Van Rensselaer, previously the head of original digital programming for Fox Broadcasting, announced today the launch of start-up digital studio Insurrection Media. Described as a “talent-friendly digital TV studio,” the company is backed by Allen DeBevoise’s Third Wave Capital Partners, which made an undisclosed equity capital investment.
Insurrection aims to streamline the production process by providing creators with resources and a higher degree of creative freedom than is typically possible within the mainstream television process. The company’s goal is to create compelling original scripted content, both comedy and drama, for distribution on OTT platforms.
During his time at Fox Broadcasting, Van Rensselaer specialized in developing “micro-studios” to incubate talent-centric original scripted content, including a unit dedicated to the live-action comedy troupe The Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone) and one centered around Keith Quinn and Jonathan Stern of Abominable Pictures, which produced “Filthy Sexy Teen$” in partnership with Fullscreen.
Van Rensselaer also headed up Fox’s deal with WIGS, the digital production studio formed by Jon Avnet (“Risky Business”) and Rodrigo Garcia (“Albert Knobbs”), which yielded several high-profile scripted projects, most notably the Julia Stiles-starrer “Blue,” currently streaming on Hulu.
