Facebook joins the slew of live video products, having announced today a live streaming product for use by celebrities only. The first to be active in the live broadcasting test include Dwayne The Rock Johnson (50 million Facebook fans), Ricardo Kaká (30 million Facebook fans), Martha Stewart (1.6 million Facebook fans), Luke Bryan, Ashley Tisdale, Lester Holt and Michael Bublé.
Is it just me or does that look like the most “aged” list of celebrities for the “Facebook generation”? And, what does that say about the demographic and target audience on Facebook currently? From that list, it seems the target viewer for Facebook’s push into live video is the Baby Boomer and Gen X.
Starting today, Facebook’ers can engage with public figures during live broadcasts using “Facebook Mentions,” the company’s direct-to-fan engagement app. Once the broadcast is wrapped, it can be saved to Facebook for VOD viewing.
Facebook has been incrementally pushing deeper into the video space over the last year. And, not surprisingly, each of the early “Live Broadcasters” listed above have also been active in video on the platform.
