Fox Sports announced today that it will launch its inaugural season of the German soccer league Bundesliga with its first livestream of a major sporting event on YouTube, a match between Bayern Munich and Hamburg on Aug. 14 at 2:30 p.m. ET. It will also be available live on Fox Sports other digital outlets, Fox Sports GO, Fox Soccer 2 GO, and FoxSports.com.
The past year has seen a significant growth in soccer content on streaming platforms and outlets. David Gandler, CEO of soccer streaming SVOD platform FuboTV, links the growth of soccer on VOD and SVOD platforms to the game’s structural compatibility with current streaming habits.
“The key insight that few have realized is that soccer fits the current viewing patterns of an ever changing audience — namely no ads,” Gandler told VideoInk. “It’s a 90-minute game with one break, no TV time outs, etc. The Netflix effect is becoming evident even in the sports space.”
