“Oscar’s Hotel” Takes Residence on Vimeo On Demand

Yesterday Vimeo on Demand premeiered “Oscar’s Hotel For Fantastical Creatures” the first of its original series produced by New Form Digital, Discovery’s digital content accelerator studio backed by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer.
The series, created by filmmaker and YouTube star PJ Ligouri, tells the story of Oliver (Chris Kendall), a young man thrust into a world of fantasy creatures and misadventures when his uncle disappears and leaves Oliver to manage a thoroughly unusual hotel property.
Vimeo On Demand is rapidly becoming a venue of choice for digital video creators looking to bring their ideas to scale. Not only does the platform make it easy for creators to monetize their projects by selling direct to fans, Vimeo has also put creator’s needs front and center. The streaming platform funded the series but they left the creative control firmly in the hands of “Oscar’s Hotel” writer / director PJ Ligouri and his team.
In an interview conducted by VideoInk Ligouri was quick to praise Vimeo for their support of his creative vision. “They’ve been very great in letting us roam free with our creative ideas.” Ligouri told us. “It’s been very liberating just to make whatever we wanted really.”
Vimeo has solidified its position in the video landscape as the destination for premium, high quality content, establishing itself as a platform for serious creatives in the often laissez faire web video ecosystem. Couple that with the rollout of a suite of tools and partnerships designed to empower creators and drive meaningful revenue against IP, and it’s no surprise Vimeo On Demand has landed a project like “Oscar’s Hotel”, “High Maintenence” and “The Chosen,” among others.
Starring actor Chris Kendall, himself a YouTuber of some note, the series also boasts an expansive cast including some of online video’s biggest names. A who’s who of web video creators from Grace Helbig and Pewdiepie to Anna Akana and Elliot Morgan appear alongside mainstream stars like Patrick Stewart and Alfred Molina. Many of the stars are barely recognizable lending their voices to a host of titular “fantastical creatures” and costumes created by the Jim Henson Creature Shop.
The series is the first episodic project for Ligouri. The writer/director is perhaps best known for his popular YouTube channel, KickThePJ, which runs the gamut from sketch comedy to personal vlogs. Ligouri was among New Form Digital’s first class of digital pilot creators selected for his prowess in creating online video and provided with the resources and guidance to develop his own pilot. That pilot caught the eye of Vimeo, who opted to take Ligouri’s vision to series.
The first episode of “Oscar’s Hotel For Fantastical Creatures” is avaailable now on Vimeo on Demand but binge fans beware, the series will be rolling out weekly rather than in one big block. Fans can buy and stream the entire series at Vimeo On Demand for just $9.99.
