The new partnership will focus on international news, science, tech and business content, most of which will be drawn from the BBC’s global site BBC.com. The BBC will syndicate approximately 200 of the videos per month to Yahoo for distribution to audiences in North America.
Gail Jammy, the head of business development for BBC Global News touted the advantages of the deal for American and Canadian news consumers in a statement announcing the deal, saying, “Through our network of international journalists and the strength of our news gathering operation, BBC News is able to deliver on the ground reporting and video reports that provide a truly global perspective on the day’s news agenda. Extending our partnership with Yahoo to North America offers a great opportunity for us to further extend our relationship with online users and give more of them access to our award-winning journalism.”
The news comes on the heels of a major streaming expansion for the BBC that will see the iconic public broadcaster launch its own OTT video platform in the United States and other international markets. The partnership with Yahoo, which revolves solely around short-form news content, will further expand the BBC’s digital footprint in North America and serve American and Canadian appetites for British media content.
