Discovery Communications has finally named a new boss for its digital portfolio, DirecTV vet Karen Leever, who joins the company as its new VP and general manager for digital media.
Leever will fill the position recently vacated by longtime Discovery digital boss Sean Atkins, who jumped ship earlier this month to become president of MTV. From her new post, Leever will oversee Discovery’s considerable digital holdings, including the entire the Discovery Digital Networks portfolio of channels, which currently generates about 200 million streams per month globally. She will also inherit DiscoveryVR, Discovery’s nascent mobile virtual reality product, launched in August.
Leever will report to Discovery’s chief commercial officer Paul Guyardo, who praised Leever’s digital bone fides in a statement, saying, “I know from experience that Karen is one of the best in the digital space and her diverse and impressive expertise will be invaluable to Discovery as we grow our digital brands and businesses even further.”
Leever is a marketing vet who has worked in lead content development positions for brands including Kmart, QVC and the Home Shopping Network. Most recently, she served for nearly a decade as president of digital marketing, product development and direct sales for DirecTV, overseeing the growth of that network’s digital brand. She will now apply that learning to driving product design and development for Discovery’s network of web properties supporting growth of Discovery’s online video interests, She will also be responsible for generating new initiatives in the vein of DiscoveryVR, as well as supporting existing program.
