SyFy is joining the ranks of linear TV networks experimenting with mobile and digital distribution schemes for popular programming according to an announcement released today.
The science fiction-focused channel has released the entire ninth season of its popular reality makeup competition “Face Off” via its mobile app ahead of the January premiere of season 10. It will be available on SyFy.com and the network’s recently launched SyFy Now mobile app. The first eight seasons will also be also be available on the digital platforms, allowing users to catch up on the show before diving into a new season, a move aimed at jump-starting interest in the long running competition show before its linear TV debut.
The new season will also benefit from SyFy Sync, a co-viewing app developed by SyFy that provides an enhanced viewing experience for fans of the show. While the episode airs on linear television, the app will provide users with additional content aligned with the episode, ranging from information and photos to supplemental video content and interactive games.
This isn’t the first time SyFy has leveraged mobile video technology to give a boost to its linear offerings. Last fall the network tapped emerging mobile VR technology to create an immersive 360 degree experience to promoting the launch of its new original series “The Expanse.”
