Canadian kids and family programming leader DHX Media announced today that it has entered into a five-year content pact with DreamWorks Animation to co-produce animated content with DHX Studios.
The deal will have DreamWorks Animation and DHX partner for 130 episodes of original animated content to be distributed on DHX Television owned and operated linear channels, including Family Channel, Family Jr., Family CHRGD and Télémagino in Canada. Under the deal DreamWorks Animation will handle global distribution outside of Canada.
In addition to original animated content, DHX has also licensed 300 half-hour units of content from DreamWorks Animation-owned multi-platform entertainment company AwesomenessTV. The AwesomenessTV content will be used to populate a previously announced teen-focused evening programming block on Canada’s family channel. The block, branded F2M, is set to launch in January, anchored by the latest installment of the long-running “Degrassi” franchise, DHX’s “Degrassi: Next Class.” The deal will also see DHX take charge of distribution for AwesomenessTV content in Canada including linear, SVOD and OTT channels.
DHX Media has been increasingly active in the digital scene over the past year. In June, the company pacted with Netflix to revive its long-running teen franchise Degrassi. Under the terms of the deal. Netflix acquired worldwide distribution rights for the new season of “Degrassi,” with DHX retaining control of the property in Canada, Australia and France. DHX has also previously licensed influencer-driven content from AwesomenessTV for the Family Channel.
