Back in 1960, four musicians from Liverpool took the name The Beatles (first Beatals, then the Silver Beetles), inspired by Buddy Holly’s backing band The Crickets. So perhaps it’s fitting that their music accompanies Netflix’s new animated children’s series “Beat Bugs,” announced today.
Created by by Josh Wakely (“My Mind’s Own Melody”), who will direct, write and produce the series, “Beat Bugs” tells the story of five insect friends (Jay, Kumi, Crick, Buzz, and Walter) who band together to explore and learn in an overgrown suburban backyard, which to them is their entire universe.
The series is produced Grace: A Storytelling Company (Grace), Thunderbird and Beyond Screen Production. It will debut on Netflix this summer. Australian Netflix members will be able to view show on Netflix soon after its premiere on Seven Network.
The producers cut a deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing for worldwide rights to record covers of Beatles songs from the band’s Northern Songs catalog, which will be woven into the narrative of each episode. Artists including Eddie Vedder , P!nk, James Bay , Sia, The Shins, Of Monsters and Men, Chris Cornell , Regina Spektor, James Corden and Birdy have already recorded a collection of Beatles classics for the show — including “All You Need Is Love,” “Come Together,” “Penny Lane ,” “Yellow Submarine,” “Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds,” “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” “Magical Mystery Tour” and “Help!” — and more will be announced in the coming months.
“Josh and his team have not only developed a compelling children’s show filled with life lessons, but they’ve built a show that will transcend generations and have parents and grandparents enjoying right alongside their little ones,” said Andy Yeatman , director of original kid’s content at Netflix, in a statement.
The series is the first project from Grace, a company co-owned by Wakely and “Beat Bugs” executive producer Trevor Roy. The animation is being handled by Atomic Cartoons, a division of Thunderbird, and the series is being represented worldwide by Beyond Distribution.
