Video hosting platform Vimeo announced this morning that it has added SVOD channel Cheddar to its platter of streaming offerings.
Launched in February by former BuzzFeed president and COO Jon Steinberg (pictured, right, with anchor Kristen Scholar), Cheddar is a live and on-demand video news network offering a blend of business, media and cultural news for millennials. It has been live streaming from Post 10 on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ Marketsite, utilizing platforms including Facebook Live.
“TV channels and cable systems are over, this [OTT] model is what’s next,” said Steinberg, founder and CEO of Cheddar, who was at BuzzFeed from 2010 to 2014.
Beginning today, customers can subscribe to Cheddar for $6.99 a month at Cheddar.tv or Cheddar.com, powered by Vimeo, and view the channel on any device with the Vimeo app. Within 90 days, Cheddar will launch its own dedicated iOS, tvOS, and Roku apps, also powered by Vimeo’s platform.
Vimeo’s multi-year deal with Cheddar comes on the heels of last week’s announcement that it was expanding its distribution capabilities with the acquisition of over-top-top (OTT) subscription platform VHX, bolstering its position as a competitor straddling the Netflix and YouTube ecosystems.
