Given that Complex was sold to Hearst and Verizon just three weeks ago — the energy and drive was in full swing at the Complex Media Presentation (“not a New Front” Complex Head of Video Marc Fernandez was quick to point out).
Call it whatever you want — the shear volume of projects and the scope of the content out put made Complex the most prolific network — actually a series of networks — that I’ve seen out of the New Fronts these past two weeks.
Complex Media has grown into a series of stand-alone franchises — each with a strong editorial POV and the kind of authentic street attitude that should make the folks at MTV feel a little long in the tooth. Collider was purchased by Complex in January of 2015. Collider.com, a news and information site that covers movies, television and video games. It filled a void in Complex’s collection of pop culture verticals that now attracts more than 120 million visitors each month.
And now under the Complex umbrella — the focus has turned almost exclusively to video. Star interviews, on set video, and not just the basic film studio bits. Lots of original stuff, often with real fan-boy attitude. Now Complex is producing “Presenting Collider: Movie Talk” a daily “ESPN of movie news.” And Film HQ, in partnership with Lionsgate.
Complex News, Complex Sports, Complex Food, Sole Collector, Green Label and The Ride Channel are all sites owned and powered by the Complex Brand.
And now — they’ve partnered with Docu Director Billy Corben to produce a number of original films out of Corbe’s Raconteur films label. Corben and his producing partner Alfred Spellman, are best known for Cocaine Cowboys, and their brand of street-smart filmmaking enjoys a productive home in South Florida. So for Complex Corben is producing “A Sunny Place for Shady People: A study on Florida fuckery” about the true nature of South Florida.
And, with Spike Lee as Director and Executive Producer: The American Complex: Part docu-series, part magazine news program that dives into the issues America SHOULD be talking about
Under the banner Complex Originals, Sneaker Shopping, Hot Ones, Get Sweaty with Emily Oberg
And Complex Live: A daily news show, shot live in a brand-new studio facility that will also host Sole Collector, First We Feast and Pigeons and Planes live programming.
>And just to be clear about the fact that Complex is more than video — they announced Complex CON, a multi-day event slated for next fall at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach Ca. Marc Ecko announced that he’s tapped entertainer Pharrell Williams as the event’s cultural director.
And Complex will produce a show leading up the the event. Road To ComplexCon: will be video series that features the faces and voices that matter most, as they prepare for what they describe as a cultural World’s Fair.
“Our audience, and all the contributors that shape our like-minded universe of content are some of the most influential people in the world. Period” said Ecko. “We wanted to create an event that celebrates them and creatively push ourselves to constantly elevate and re-imagine our shared horizons.”
And then, just to make sure no one in the room will ever forget the presentation -Ecko pulled an Oprah. “Reach under your seats” Ecko coaxed the audience “and you’ll find your very own Golden Ticket.” Sure enough, all expenses paid to Complex CON — airfare, hotel, and event tickets. The crowd was suitably stunned.
