NBCUniversal’s ad-free streaming comedy channel Seeso has greenlit a sixth season of the Just For Laughs stand-up comedy series “Funny as Hell,” hosted by Jon Dore (“Inside Amy Schumer,” “Kroll Show”).
The show will start production at this year’s Just For Laughs Festival, July 26–27 in Montreal.
“Funny as Hell” debuted on HBO Canada in 2011. Previous seasons of the show were available on Seeso at launch in January, and they have been “killing it,” according to Evan Shapiro, EVP of digital enterprises for NBCUniversal, in a statement, so “partnering with Just For Laughs for an all new season was easy as hell.”
Comedians scheduled to appear on the sixth season of “Funny as Hell” include Cameron Esposito (“Marriage Material, “Take My Wife”), Eugene Mirman (“Debate Wars,” “Bob’s Burgers”), Janeane Garofalo (“Wet Hot American Summer”), Beth Stelling (“The Half Hour”), Aparna Nancherla (“Late Night with Seth Meyers”), Kurt Metzger (“Inside Amy Schumber”), Mary Lynn Rajskub (“24”), Liza Treyger (“Horace and Pete”), The Lucas Brothers (“Lucas Bros Moving Co.”), Sean Patton (“Best Bars in America”), Ahmed Bharoocha (“The Briefcase”) and Emo Philips (“UHF”). Additional comedians will be announced closer to the event.
Seeso is available for $3.99 a month at www.seeso.com and on various streaming platforms and connected devices. In addition to original series — including “The UCB Show,” “HarmonQuest” starring Dan Harmon (creator of the NBC/Yahoo series “Community”), “Bajillion Dollar Propertie$,” “Big Jay Oakerson’s What’s Your F@%king Deal?!” and “New York’s Funniest” — Seeso offers classics from the NBC archives such as “30 Rock,” “Parks and Recreation,” “The Office” and “Saturday Night Live,” as well as licensed shows such as “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” and “Fawlty Towers.”
Founded in 1983 by Gilbert Ruzon as a two-day, French-language stand-up comedy festival in Montreal, Just For Laughs now draws an average of 1.35 million visitors to the city each summer. Today, it operates under the umbrella of the Just For Laughs Group, which also has divisions focused on television production, digital content and talent management. Its television franchise “Just for Laughs Gags” has been seen in 135 countries (and on 95 airlines), as well as its YouTube channel, which has racked up more than 5.38 million subscribers and 2.5 billion views.
Last week, it was announced that comedian Kevin Hart would be scouting talent for his Laugh Out Loud VOD channel, a joint venture between the comedian/actor’s company Hartbeat Digital and Lionsgate, at this year’s Just for Laughs Festival.
