Last October, Forbes put Felix Kjellberg (a.k.a. PewDiePie) atop its list of highest earning YouTubers, with $12 million in earnings for 2015. But that was an estimate. Today, Swedish tech news outlet Brexit broke the news that a year-end report filed in Sweden listed an $8 million operating profit for the gaming vlogger’s company Pewdie Productions.
According to the report, Kjellberg’s company had $9 million in sales in 2015, up from 2014, when it had $7.4 million in sales and operating profits of $7.3 million.
PewDiePie is the most subscribed-to YouTube channel, with more than 46 million subscribers who follow his game play videos, sketches and vlogs. Chilean Germán Alejandro Garmendia Aranis’channel HolaSoyGerman is a distant number two, with over 28 million subscribers.
In addition to his YouTube channel, Kjellberg also has the reality series “Scare PewDiePie,” produced Maker Studios and Skybound Entertainment, which debuted as an exclusive for YouTube Red subscribers last fall. The series was greenlit for a second season last month.
In January, Kjellberg partnered with his multi-channel network Maker Studios and Skybound Entertainment to launch Revelmode, a creator network and media company dedicated to producing high-quality gaming and pop culture content featuring fellow YouTubers CinnamonToastKen (Ken Morrison), CutiePieMarzia (Marzia Bisognin), Dodger (Brooke Lawson), EmmaBlackery (Emma Blackery) and JackSepticEye (Sean McLoughlin).
But it hasn’t been all thumbs-up and brofists for the 26-year-old Swede. Earlier this month, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) settled charges against Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, Inc. for deceiving consumers with its 2014 marketing campaign for the “Hobbit”-inspired video game “Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor” by failing to adequately disclose that it paid digital influencers, including Kjellberg, thousands of dollars to post positive gameplay videos on YouTube and other social media.
