NBC has the U.S. TV rights to the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro (Aug. 5–21), but that won’t be keeping content from the games off of YouTube.
The Google-owned video hosting platform announced today that it has partnered with broadcasters in more than 60 countries, including the BBC (U.K.), America Movil (Latin America, excluding Brazil) and NHK (Japan), to present official Olympics highlights on YouTube.
YouTube is sending 15 creators to Rio, including Liza Koshy, Brodie Smith, Ben Brown, Caeli, Chloe Morello, and Felipe Castanhari, to provide an on-the-ground coverage of parties and other events surrounding the games, through everything from bike rides to aerial tours. They will make use of its new mobile live streaming feature to share real-time moments from Brazil, as well as 360-degree videos.
According to YouTube, in the last 12 months, over 23,000 years of content covering the four most popular Olympic Games’ sports — athletics, gymnastics, diving and swimming and volleyball — has been viewed on the platform, which is the equivalent of watching all 17 days of the Olympic Games, 24 hours a day, over half a million times. Nearly two thirds of the watching has been done on mobile devices.
YouTube also boasted of its Olympic performance for brands, announcing that ads from Worldwide and National Olympic Partners received the equivalent of over 400 years worth of watch time from April through June 2016.
NBC will stream 4,500 hours of its coverage of the Rio Olympics, available at NBCOlympics.com and through its NBC Sports app, but only to verified pay TV subscribers. Non-subscribers will be able to stream 30 minutes of video on their first visit and 5 minutes on subsequent visits. The network is also launching the second screen app NBC Olympics: Rio News & Results, with features that include news updates, video highlights, TV listings, medal standings and standalone sections for all 34 sports.
