YouTube plans to make its presence known at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. The American video sharing website, which is returning as the official sponsor of the Shorts Programs for the fifth consecutive year, will also be premiering “This Is Everything: Gigi Gorgeous” — the first YouTube Red Original film to premiere at the Festival as an official selection. Activations this year will also include the YouTube House on Main Street and other programming in collaboration with the Sundance Institute.
“YouTube is committed to actively supporting the work of risk-taking storytellers worldwide” said Danielle Tiedt, Chief Marketing Officer of YouTube, in a press release. “Through our various activations, we hope to shine a spotlight on the Festival’s amazing storytellers and highlight how YouTube is a tremendous resource for the independent creative community.”
Some of the ways YouTube and Sundance plan to further help the creative community is through two new initiatives, Sundance Institute | YouTube Creators Intensive and the Sundance Institute | YouTube New Voices Lab. The Creators Intensive program is a storytelling workshop that starts at Sundance and continues for three days at YouTube Space LA from March 31-April 2. The Intensive will help a select group of YouTube creators develop new series and short films for a possible first-look deal with YouTube Originals.
The New Voices Lab initiative, on the other hand, won’t take place till months after Sundance from November 16–18 at YouTube Space LA. The Lab’s goal is to work with select Fellows on developing projects within an environment, which according to the release encourages “risk-taking, experimentation, and innovation.” Those who complete the Lab program will also receive access to Sundance’s Alumni community, as well as creative and strategic support for their work.
In addition, from January 19–24, the YouTube House on Main Street will be open daily for festival goers and offers a wide range of programming including panels, receptions, fireside chats, screenings, and private events featuring music performances from artists including R&B singer Kehlani, platinum-selling singer-songwriter gnash, singer-songwriter Molly Kate Kestner, and DJ Kiss, as well as public demos of Daydream, Google’s VR offering, featuring the YouTube VR app and more.
The Sundance Film Festival will be held from Thursday, January 19 to Sunday, January 29. You can find the current schedule here.
