NBC Reaches Agreement With TV Affiliates to Improve OTT Distribution
NBC has reached an agreement with its affiliates board that will allow stations to opt in to the network’s carriage agreements with streaming services. The arrangement will also cover distribution over pay-TV providers’ TV Everywhere platforms. “This agreement sets NBC and NBC affiliates at the forefront for the future of local television distribution,” said Jean Dietze, president NBC affiliate relations.
Tribune Media Shuts Down National News Video Site Two Weeks Before Launch
Tribune Media has shut down a national digital news service less than two weeks before it was slated to launch in an effort to reconstruct its digital operations. In addition, Josh Cogswell, who joined in 2015 from Viacom, will step down as chief product officer. Digital operations will now be overseen by Steve Baron, head of product and engineering, and Larry Wert, president of broadcast media.
The Student has Become the Master: Instagram Stories Hits 200M Users as it Surpasses Snapchat
Instagram’s Snapchat Stories Clone has hit 200 million daily active users, surpassing the count of 161 million that Snapchat most recently announced alongside its IPO. Instagram Stories, which launched in August 2016, hit 100 million daily users in October, and 150 million in January, and has no signs of slowing down.
Jake Avnet’s Indigenous Media Announces Newest Short-Form Series: “Lives of Women”
Indigenous Media still believes in self distribution as it rolls out the latest short form series on its slate — “Lives of Women” — across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram. Similar to Indigenous’ popular format “60 Second Docs”, the series highlights, well, the lives of women. Co-founder Rodrigo Garcia directed the first seven episodes in the series, which premiered today.
Hulu’s TV Service to Cost $39.99, According to Sources
Hulu’s TV service will cost $39.99, according to Techcrunch, who cited unnamed sources with inside knowledge on Hulu’s plans. The information is right on track with Hulu CEO Mike Hopkins’ previous statement that its new service would cost “under $40” per month. If the new pricing is correct, it would cost a bit more than YouTube’s TV service, which is priced at $35/mo.
VR to Have a Larger Presence at This Years Facebook F8 Conference
Virtual reality (VR) is getting a lot more attention at Facebook’s annual F8 developer conference this year. The event, which will be held in San Jose next week, already has eight VR-related talks and sessions scheduled, four times as many than last year. The subjects on the schedule include social VR, VR gaming, and web-based VR experiences.There are even rumors that they may use this years conference to announce a new VR headset.

CORRECTION: Studio 71 Will Be at NewFronts, Just Not in PersonStudio71 has cut its in-person presentation at NewFronts in New York City next month. However, the company has opted to do a virtual event that will kick off during their official NewFronts slot. The “virtual” presentation will feature streaming content from some of its top talent partners including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Lilly Singh, Roman Atwood, and Rachel Levin (known as RCLBeauty101).
