Buzzfeed has announced a new live-streamed morning show that will hit the twittersphere in September.
Millennials now have a new way to wake up. Buzzfeed is taking digital news to the next level with a new Live Twitter show, “AM to DM”, set to debut on Sept. 25. An all-star cast heads the project. Buzzfeed News’ Executive Editor of Culture, Saeed Jones and BuzzFeed Books Editor Isaac Fitzgerald will host, while Cindy Vanegas-Gesuale, who’s worked at CNN, FOX, and the Huffington Post, will head as producer.
Combining both a morning show and news station, “AM to DM” will focus on the day’s most relevant stories ranging on everything from politics and science to business and entertainment. One unique show feature however is a segment called “everyday Twitter heroes” which will highlight what people are saying on Twitter live as the broadcast takes place. Buzzfeed News’ editor in chief, Ben Smith, has described the show’s story insight as happening “from right inside the news cycle”, asserting that when news stories break, the twittersphere is usually the first to know.
“Twitter is the beating heart of news and our newsroom has always embraced its power unabashedly, both for breaking news and for staying on top of it,” Smith said.
The two companies originally went public with the show concept this past May at Twitter’s Digital Content NewFronts presentation. Twitter also announced their partnership with Bloomberg Media intent on producing a 24-hour news channel that same month, showing that the site is hellbent on expanding its live-streaming video options after a slightly disappointing second quarter. Through the 625 live video events that were held during Q2, Twitter reached 55 million unique viewers. Although that places viewership up 22% from Q1, the monthly user growth rate was flat overall and declined by 2 million in the United States. Buzzfeed has seen success with Twitter live events in the past however. Their live-stream of the presidential election last Nov. garnered 6.8 million total viewers and with a promising record like that, sponsors are taking this partnership very seriously.
Wendy’s already signed on to be a presenting sponsor while Bank of America and Toyota have taken spots as initial sponsors. Buzzfeed has also said that more key sponsorships can be expected in the coming weeks before the show’s premiere.
“AM to DM” will be live-streamed for free via @Buzzfeednews and will run 8–9 AM ET.
