YouTube’s OTT TV service has secured exclusive rights to games with a new Major League Soccer team in Los Angeles. This marks the first time a streaming service has made such a deal with a U.S. pro sports team instead of a traditional TV alternative. Financial terms of the multi-year deal were not disclosed.
As part of the arrangement, YouTube TV will also have naming rights on jerseys for the team, known as Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC). The team, which joins MLS in March, is owned by media mogul Peter Guber, Magic Johnson, and Will Ferrell.
Eighteen LAFC games will be exclusive to their own YouTube TV channel, which will only be available to the TV service’s subscribers in the Los Angeles market at no extra cost.
All LAFC games for the upcoming season will be available live on YouTube TV, however, approximately half of them are nationally televised games.
LAFC will play in a newly built 22,000-seat arena, Banc of California Stadium, in downtown Los Angeles.
