Internet celebrity Zach Holmes got his start performing cringe-worthy backyard stunts, like skateboarding into cacti in nothing but a speedo, wrapping a belt of fire crackers to his body before lighting it, and having a BMX rider land a bicycle trick on his testicles. Where some might see stupid, Holmes saw opportunity — and it’s paying off.
Back in May, the global content studio Gunpowder & Sky teamed up with the YouTube banned online sensation to develop a new Jackass-style, next generation stunt series titled “Too Stupid to Die.” And today it was announced that MTV is partnering with the studio on the eight-part, half-hour series, which is now set to premiere in June.
“’Too Stupid to Die’ is the right kind of show and characters who fit our coming of age strategy that’s driving MTV’s growth,” said Chris McCarthy, President of MTV. “We were excited to develop this project with Van and thrilled to work together again.”
In addition to Holmes, the show will feature series regulars from his “crew,” which includes Coty, Meggan, Tommy “Mr.Invincible,” Blazer, and Chad, names that Gunpowder Sky hope will soon become synonymous with extreme stunts.
“The first time I saw one of Zach’s videos I dropped everything and spent the day stalking his social media,” added David Harris, Gunpowder & Sky’s SVP of Development and former MTV producer. “I haven’t seen anyone as fearless, funny or creative since the Jackass guys.”
“Too Stupid To Die” is executive produced by Gunpowder & Sky’s Van Toffler, Floris Bauer, Ross Breitenbach, David Harris and Zach Holmes. Nina L. Diaz, Tiffany Lea Williams and Nadim Amiry are executive producers for MTV.
