It’s had anime marathons, it’s had Bob Ross Marathons, and its had cooking queen Julia child marathons, Twitch is no stranger to branching out beyond its core gaming programming to find the type of content that resonates with its audience. Now, the Amazon-owned social video platform will host an “SNL marathon — the company’s first marathon involving sketch comedy.
The marathon, which begins on May 17 at 6:00 pm ET, comes to Twitch through a partnership with NBC, which is using the marathon to promote the upcoming “Saturday Night Live” Season Finale, scheduled to take place on May 19th. The marathon will include 16-hours of SNL content, which will play back-to-back for 48 hours. The programing is a mix of recent and classic sketches from the show’s inception to current episodes.
Twitch has aired more than a dozen marathons over the years, with SNL representing the first program dedicated to sketch comedy. In addition, Twitch creators will be able to co-stream the marathon. Co-streaming is a feature that allows a creator to share another channel’s video feed, but with their own commentary and community.
“Similar to Twitch chat, “Saturday Night Live” serves as live commentary on pop culture and current events,” said Jane Weedon, Director of Business Development at Twitch. “Each “SNL” sketch is a snapshot of its time, making it the ideal show to unite our global community across generations as they comment on the commentary!”
This marathon also presents itself as an opportunity for the Amazon-owned company to gauge the interests (beyond gaming) of its over 15 million daily active visitors. With Twitch already dominating the esports streaming market, the company has started to experiment with content unrelated to gaming all together. One look at Twitch’s “Always On” section, which is an area on its website dedicated to linear programming, and a user will find channel’s from Jukin Media’s Fail Army; Combat Go, a channel dedicated to martial arts; ChopperTown, a 24/7stream related to motorcycle culture; and Cinedigm’s CONtv, which offers an original slate of programming, as well as a digital catalog of over 2,800 must-watch film and TV titles.
