YouTube Premium, the Google-owned SVOD service formerly known as Youtube Red, has broken into the European market. The $11.99/mo subscription service is now available in the UK, the company announced today.
Including the UK, the streaming service, which recently experienced its first hit with the “Karate Kid” spinoff “Cobra Kai,” is now available in Austria, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Russia, Spain, and Sweden.
Youtube announced the rebrand of its SVOD service last month in a blog post that also announced the launch of its new music subscription service YouTube Music.
The SVOD makeover followed the recent success of YouTube Original “Cobra Kai.” The series came in at No. 1 for the week of May 5-12 on Parrot Analytics’ US digital originals chart and No. 5 in the overall TV shows chart. The series beat out Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why” (which in the prior week was ranked No. 1), “Arrested Development” and “Dear White People.” It also beat out the “The Handmaid’s Tale” from Hulu.
In preparation for the launch in Europe, the company has invested in content it feels will perform well on the continent. That programing includes “The Sidemen Show,” a reality series hosted a group of popular British YouTube stars, and “F2 Finding Football,” a soccer-travel series from Whistle Sports in which British freestyle skill experts seek out soccer culture from around the world.
