Verbal storytelling is becoming cool again and former Uproxx Media President Jen Sargent is ready to capitalize on the resurgence.
Despite the emergence of video, verbal storytelling is still a current (and popular) form of entertainment. But more than just entertaining viewers with nothing but audio, they have also become a popular source for broadcasters and streamers alike to mine for new video content. Seeing this growing trend, Wondery, an American podcast network, is ready to take its stories beyond verbal storytelling and it has brought on Jen Sergent, former President of Uproxx Media, to help with the task.
Sargent (pictured), an industry veteran with more than 15 years of digital media experience, has been brought on as Chief Operating Officer of Wondery. In her new role, she will work on expanding the company’s audience and revenue streams from Wondery+, its direct-to-consumer offering, to mining its growing franchise library for television, books, and film.
“It is clear that podcasts are the future of storytelling and, as such, will play a massive role in the future of digital media,” Sargent said. “Verbal storytelling has been the backbone of human communication and knowledge transfer since the beginning. I’m excited to be part of the team that’s going to shape the future of this fast-growing format.”
During her time at Uproxx, Sargent was responsible for strategy, partnerships, operations and revenue generation. During her tenure, Uproxx won multiple digital video awards, including several Gold Clios, Webby, D&AD and Cannes Lion (Gold). She was also the CEO and co-founder of HitFix, which featured entertainment’s most celebrated tastemakers and a cross-platform reach of 300 million monthly viewers.
“Jen has enviable experience spanning startups and massive global media companies, traditional and new media, consumer and business, and is a founder herself,” Wondery founder/CEO Hernan Lopez said. “I’m thrilled to have her on board.”
