Skybound Entertainment has created a new digital space for pop culture and comic book fans to gather. Today the company, which is managed by partners Robert Kirkman, David Alpert and Jon Goldman, announced the launch of GammaRay, a content platform that aims to explore and dissect every universe of pop culture. The new platform is backed by partners Skydance, Third Wave Ventures, and C Ventures.
David Alpert (The Walking Dead) will lead the venture at GammaRay as CEO. Joining the team as COO is Do Duong, who joins the company from All Def Media, a digital entertainment brand for fans of hip-hop, where he served as Vice President of Business Operations and Analytics. Doung will report to Alpert.
“Skybound’s track record engaging super fans and building franchises that cross traditional, digital, social, and e-commerce gives GammaRay an incredible leg up,” said Duong. “Even in stealth mode over the past few months, we’ve been adding hundreds of thousands, and soon millions, of users and video views and see a clear path to overtaking the current leaders in our category.”
Gamma Ray launches with three original short-form series that include “The Fighting Show,” in which a veteran trainer in the world of fighting and stunt work for film and television walks a host through the techniques and history behind some of pop culture’s most renowned fight scenes and characters; “Popcraft,” which celebrates some of pop culture’s favorite artists and their fandom, like creating portraits of famous anime characters from unconventional materials; and “The List Show,” which is described as a “nutritious, weekly, fan-pop list show with just enough insight to get you inspired while keeping it short and sweet.”
