The “Morning Joe” panel took a dim view of Donald Trump’s decision to fire Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Twitter, with co-host Mika Brzezinski devoting a small monologue to suggesting that the president was a “moron” for doing it.
“Some might say you would look like a moron if you acted so impulsively on the world stage and you would fire on Twitter, your Secretary of State,” said Brzezinski Wednesday. “He just sent Tillerson to Africa to clean up for his own mess and now all the new alliances and relationships that were made there, they have no one to talk to. I mean this is a hot mess.”
“Some might say,” offered fellow co-host Joe Scarborough.
The “some might say” alludes to Tillerson supposedly calling Trump a “moron” last summer.
On Tuesday morning, Tillerson became the latest senior member of the Trump administration to make his exit. The Washington Post was first to break the story and the president made it official on Twitter minutes later. Multiple reports yesterday said the Secretary of State learned he was out only after reading the news online.
In a public statement, Tillerson said he would move swiftly to ensure a calm transition for his replacement, CIA Director Mike Pompeo.
“What is most important is to ensure an orderly and smooth transition during a time that the country continues to face significant policy and national security challenges, ” he said. Tillerson also thanked employees from the Departments of State and Defense, but pointedly declined to thank Trump.
In addition to Tillerson, Communications Director Hope Hicks and economic adviser Gary Cohn have also made their exits from the White House in recent days.
