Just off the enormously successful "Fast Five," Vin Diesel will star in and produce the action comedy "The Machine," MGM announced Thursday.

Diesel will play a human-like machine that the Pentagon created as an ultimate weapon. Twenty years later, after the project has been decommissioned, a boy discovers and befriends The Machine. The government learns that the Machine has been reactivated, leaving Diesel's character to protect the family.

The writing team behind the successful "Night at the Museum" and "Night at the Museum: Battle for the Smithsonian" Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant, wrote the original script and are producing.

Diesel is producing through his One Race Films.

The action star knows what he's doing as a producer. He produced "Fast Five," "Fast and Furious," "The Chronicles of Riddick" and "A Man Apart." In 1997, he produced, directed, wrote and executive produced "Strays."

Production on "The Machine" is set to begin in the fall.
