NBC has given a second-season order to summer comedy series “The Carmichael Show,” while canceling its other freshman summer comedy “Mr. Robinson,” TheWrap has learned.
Starring comedian Craig Robinson of “The Office” as a music teacher, “Mr. Robinson” originally received a series order for the 2014-15 season. It was developed as a single camera comedy by “The Office’s” Owen Ellickson and Greg Daniels with Universal Television producing. Showrunners Mark and Robb Cullen joined the show when it became a mutlicamera project.
NBC eventually burned off all six episodes, airing them two at a time over the course of three weeks during the summer.
“The Carmichael Show” received a similar summer release strategy, but enjoyed critical support and solid ratings. Its premiere Aug. 26 was the most watched debut for a summer comedy in eight years, drawing 4.8 million total viewers in Nielsen live-plus-same day numbers.
Comedian Jerrod Carmichael stars in the show and serves as executive producer with Nick Stoller; A24’s Ravi Nandan and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel; and Mike Royce and Mike Scully. The series is co-produced Universal Television and 20th Century Fox Television.
