NBC Local Stations Partner With KPCC, ProPublica

Deal is part of promise made with Comcast acquired NBCU

NBC will announce on Tuesday a collaboration between its local television stations and local, non-profit news organizations, according to the New York Times.

NBC stations in Philadelphia and Los Angeles will work with public radio stations – in L.A. it’s KPCC — and the station in Chicago will work with The Chicago Reporter, a blog and magazine.

The deal is a promise Comcast made to establish partnerships when it acquired NBC Universal. The new partnerships will be based on an existing relationship between NBC’s station in San Diego, KNSD, and the website voiceofsandiego.org.

Valari Staab, president of NBC-owned stations, told the Times that the local stations wanted partner organizations that could contribute unique content.

All 10 of NBC’s local stations will work with ProPublica, the Pulitzer-Prize winning non-profit outfit that specializes in investigative reporting.

For all of the organizations there is an obvious benefit – pooling resources to report on the news. For the non-profits taking part, there is an additional bonus — NBC will make donations to each partner, though no amount has been specified.
