Newtown School Shootings: Paramount Postpones Premiere of ‘Jack Reacher’

Paramount has delayed the Pittsburgh premiere of the film, which stars Tom Cruise, after the mass shooting on Friday

Paramount has postponed Saturday’s Pittsburgh, Pa. premiere of its upcoming Tom Cruise action thriller “Jack Reacher” in the wake of Friday’s mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., the studio announced on Friday.

“Due to the terrible tragedy in Newtown Connecticut, and out of honor and respect for the families of the victims whose lives were senselessly taken, we are postponing tomorrow's Pittsburgh premiere of "Jack Reacher.” Our hearts go out to all those who lost loved ones,” the studio said in a statement.

The change for the studio’s action-heavy holiday release arrives after the second deadliest school shooting in United States history.

Adam Lanza, 20, is believed to have killed his mother at her home and 26 other people — 20 of them young children — at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the Western Connecticut community of Newtown. His mother Nancy Lanza was a teacher at the school, and also reportedly owned the guns Lanza used in the killing spree. Lanza apparently took his own life at the school.

President Obama addressed the nation on Friday, noting the spate of recent mass shootings across the nation, from the shooting in Aurora, Colo. in July to the one in Oak Creek, Wisc. in August.

"We're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics," Obama said.
