Nick Cannon Shrugs Off #OscarsSoWhite Controversy in Rhyme: ‘Don’t Waste Your Voice, Don’t Waste Your Prayers’ (Video)

Nick Cannon has weighed in on the Oscar diversity controversy in rhyme, advancing a new perspective that urges people to save their energy for events that really matter, such as “the thousands killed in Nigeria,” instead.

“Don’t waste your voice, don’t waste your prayers, save it for the thousands killed in Nigeria, Kenya, the Philippines, Syria, or right here in our urban areas,” he rapped in a Facebook post. “Nah, now no one cares.”

In the two-minute video, the “Chi-Raq” star implores the community to not be distracted “by these lottery tickets and statues” amid outrage over the Academy’s exclusion of actors and actresses of color for the second year in a row.

Since then, people like Spike Lee, Michael Moore, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and Mark Ruffalo have spoken out about the controversy, some even vowing to boycott the Feb. 28 event. However, Cannon criticized those people in his rhyme as well. "We're crying for votes, but how many of us are on the board?" he asked. "Better yet, when is the last time you showed up and supported the NAACP Awards?" After claiming that the poem was "not another trophy rant," he went on to list several civilian deaths in the past years. [contextual-link post_id="825406" title="See Video" link_title="Spike Lee on Oscars Whitewash: 'I'd Like to Hear From Studio Heads'" target=""] "Look what they did to Oscar," he said. "I'm talking Oscar Grant, Sandra Bland, Mike Brown, Tamir Rice, Eric Garner, Freddie Gray. Why we trust what the news say anyway?" "Hollywood mainstream don't validate me, yo," Cannon added. "You in this show for the business, or this business for the show?" [contextual-link post_id="824347" title="Also Read" link_title="Chris Rock 'Scrapped His Jokes' After #OscarsSoWhite Controversy" target=""] Cannon also addressed the controversy surrounding the show's host Chris Rock, whom many have asked to step down in light of the diversity issue. Rock has decided not to bow out of the ceremony, but will instead address the controversy and is reworking his opening monologue. "That's why I told Chris, man go ahead and rock that shit," Cannon said. "Hell yeah, I'm gonna watch that ceremony where they gonna let a black man be the Master for at least two hours."
