Oscar Expands Pre-Show to 90 Minutes

Academy triples length of official arrivals show, names Charlie Haykel and Juliane Hare producers

The official Oscar pre-show is growing from 30 to 90 minutes this year, Oscar producers Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer announced on Tuesday.

Cameron DiazIn naming longtime Mischer associates Charlie Haykel and Juliane Hare to produce the traditional red carpet arrivals show, Cohen and Mischer said that the ABC program will air beginning at 4 p.m. Pacific time, a full hour earlier than usual.

In a press release announcing the extended pre-show, Haykel enthused about the expanded time slot. "In addition to having more time to talk to the biggest movie stars in the world," he said, "we'll be able to take the viewers behind the scenes before the biggest event in entertainment!"

On-air talent has not been announced for the pre-show.

Haykel and Hare have worked with Mischer for 14 and 18 years, respectively. Haykel produced the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards and the Obama inaugural special "We Are One" with Mischer, while Hare has worked on three pre-game and halftime Super Bowl shows with the veteran producer.

Typically, the Academy and ABC have restricted other television outlets from broadcasting live from the red carpet during the official Oscar pre-show. With the expanded pre-show, though, AMPAS spokesperson Leslie Unger told theWrap that the embargo will remain in effect only for the final 30 minutes, averting what would no doubt be a huge protest were it to be extended to the entire pre-show.
