Oscar-Winning Costume Designer Theoni V. Aldredge Dies at 78

Worked on Robert Redford’s “The Great Gatsby” and Broadway shows such as “Dreamgirls” and “A Chorus Line”

Oscar and Tony award winning costume designer Theoni V. Aldredge has died. She was 78.

In a career that spanned nearly four decades, Aldredge designed glitzy threads for hit Broadway shows such as "Dreamgirls," "A Chorus Line," "42nd Street," and "Gypsy." Perhaps the apotheosis of her sequins laden aesthetic was the outfits she designed for the transvestite protagonists of "La Cage aux Folles."

She won Tonys for her work on "La Cage," "Barnum," and "Annie."

On the big screen, Aldredge scored an Academy Award designing jazz age duds for Robert Redford and Mia Farrow's "The Great Gatsby."

Additional Oscar nominations would come for her work on "Never on a Sunday" and "Phaedra." Though the stage would remain her first love,  Aldredge build up an impressive filmography working on films such as "Moonstruck," "Addams Family Values," and "Network."

Though Aldredge was best known for costumes that were veritable Las Vegas strips onto themselves, she also did more naturalistic and understated costumes for plays like "A Delicate Balance."

She is survived by her husband, the actor Tom Aldredge.
