Emmys Rule Change Sets Minimum TV Movie Length at 75 Minutes

TV Academy also announces new category recognizing music composition for documentaries, sets two choreography categories

Black Mirror San Junipero Awards

The Television Academy announced a new rule Thursday that sets the minimum length to qualify for the Television Movie category at 75 minutes — or if you prefer, 14 minutes longer than “San Junipero,” the celebrated episode of “Black Mirror” that took home two Primetime Emmys including for TV Movie in 2017.

But before “Black Mirror” fans get too bummed, the effect is likely to be mostly unnoticeable on future ceremonies. After all, this year’s TV Movie Emmy-winner, “USS Callister,” clocked in at 76 minutes.

The TV Academy also announced that it has approved a new category, Outstanding Music Composition for a Documentary Series or Special, which will recognize “the unique creative process and evaluation criteria for documentary scoring, versus scoring for scripted series or specials.”

In addition, the Academy restructured how it honors choreography on television with two new awards: Outstanding Choreography for Variety and Reality Programming (Variety Series, Variety Special, Structured Reality, Unstructured Reality and Competition Program); and Outstanding Choreography for Scripted Programming (Comedy Series, Drama Series, Limited Series and Television Movie). Until last year, choreography was honored in a single category.

The new rules and categories will apply to nominees for the 2019 Emmy Awards, set to air Sep. 22 from 8-11 p.m. ET on Fox.
