‘Paranormal Activity 4’ Scares Up $4.5M in Late Night Showings

"Paranormal Activity 4" is projected to bring in between $35 million to $40 million this weekend

"Paranormal Activity 4" scared up a frightfully good $4.5 million in late night showings last night, a Paramount spokeswoman said.

The latest in the found footage franchise is on pace to rack up between $35 million to $40 million during its opening weekend, which should secure it the top spot in box office rankings ahead of the other big premiere, Tyler Perry's "Alex Cross."

Though impressive, that would still be slightly less than the $52 million that “Paranormal Activity 3” opened to about this time last year. With a budget of just $5 million, Paramount should enjoy a healthy profit margin regardless of whether or not the fourth film matches previous entries.

The strong start for "Paranormal Activity 4" came at 3,000 locations and takes into account screenings that began at 9 p.m. Thursday — a sort of late-night show for the blue-plate set.

Paramount also believes the new "Paranormal" will play well with foreign audiences. The studio will open the film this weekend in the U.K., Australia, Russia, Spain, Brazil and Mexico and other markets.

The R-rated thriller is directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, the team behind “PA 3.” The screenplay is by Christopher Landon.  Akiva Goldsman executive produces.
