Penn Badgley to Play Jeff Buckley

The Smuggler Films biopic tracks the days leading up to the late singer-songwriter’s 1991 performance at his father’s tribute concert

Penn Badgley, who plays Dan Humphrey in "Gossip Girl," has landed the role of the brilliant singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley in "Greetings From Tim Buckley," Smuggler Films announced Monday.

The movie, based on a true story, is about the days leading up to Jeff Buckley's noted 1991 performance at his father's tribute concert.

Patrick Milling Smith, John N. Hart and Fred Zollo are producing.  The movie was written by Dan Algrant, Emma Sheanshang and David Brendel. Dan Algrant is directing.

According to Smuggler statement: "Through a romance with a young woman working at the concert, he comes to understand the father who abandoned him. Culminating in a cathartic performance of his father's most famous song, Jeff's debut stuns the audience and launches his career as one of the greatest young musicians of his time."

Buckley died in 1997 at 30.

"Greetings from Tim Buckley" is scheduled to begin shooting this August in New York City.

Badgley (above) played Seth Bregman in this year's "Margin Call" and Woodchuck Todd in 2010's "Easy A."
