"Good Morning America" co-anchor Robin Roberts said Wednesday she would take a break from the show as she deals with her blood and bone marrow disease, but ABC clarified that she will return to the show before going on medical leave for a bone-marrow transplant.
Roberts, 51, said on Wednesday's show that she was "not feeling well" and would "get some vacay." But ABC said that her vacation had been previously scheduled, and that she was expected back at "GMA" on Aug. 20.
Sometime after that she will go on medical leave, ABC said. She said at a Television Critics Association panel last week that she planned to take the leave closer to the fall.
She and her ABC News colleagues said at the time that Katie Couric, Diane Sawyer, Barbara Walters and the other women of "The View" might contribute to "GMA" during Roberts' treatment.
Roberts said in June that she has has the blood and bone-marrow disease myelodysplastic syndrome, or MDS. Five years ago she successfully battled breast cancer.
"My doctors tell me I'm going to beat this — and I know it's true," she said in June.
