Our ‘American Idol’ Plea: Save Casey Abrams!

A seemingly popular “American Idol” contestant got by with a Judges’ Save, but now needs a little help from his friends

Save Casey.

After Thursday night's "American Idol" results show voting shocker — in which crowd favorite Casey Abrams received the fewest totals and required a historic reprieve from Steven Tyler, et al. — it wouldn't be a surprise to see that two-word plea soon spray-painted on the water tower in the 20-year-old dynamo's hometown of Idyllwild, CA, a la "Ferris Bueller's Day Off."

More than any of the show's remaining 11 contestants, Abrams has seemed like a lock to advance into the final ten, and possibly even to the bitter end. The trio of judges has been giving the bearded wonder so much effusive praise that Abrams could have started practicing counting all the cash that would be his if those three votes were the only ones that mattered.

For one night only, they were, as Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson conspired to use the so-called "Judges' Save" to keep him around. But that one-and-done weapon won't be available to them next week, when two contestants will be trimmed like so many Abrams' facial hairs. It seems logical to conclude that he will be in danger yet again.

It's hard to fathom what went wrong for Abrams. Yes, he absolutely mangled his cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" last week. Perhaps his low vote total resulted from Kurt Cobain unleashing a curse from the grave on Abrams' hirsute heinie. And no, he doesn't have the down-home appeal of Scotty McCreery or the "Twilight"-y looks of James Durbin.

Still, the dude can deliver a mesmerizing performance, as his cover of "With a Little Help from My Friends" a few weeks back proved, which can't be said of at least a few of season 10's other remaining contestants. There's a reason Jackson raves about Abrams as if he were talking about his old Journey bandmate Steve Perry.

It is possible that Abrams didn't earn high totals because his seemingly rabid fans slacked this week, thinking he wasn't in jeopardy. But with their favorite's fate entirely in the hands of fickle voters from here on out and the odds seemingly stacked against him, now might be the time for Team Casey to launch that water-tower campaign.
