One cold wintry night, a liberal journalist sits at his desk in an eerie hotel room to write the epic ballad of the outlaw, John Kepe...
His words depict a racially-charged 1950's rural South Africa, where a notorious yet charismatic outlaw terrorized white settler farmers for over a decade before events culminated in his capture at the pre- dawn of apartheid. Led by the hardliner General Helmut Botha, a decorated war hero, a mammoth manhunt ensued for the capture of Kepe in the very mountain where he was rumoured to occupy a Noah's Ark like cave.
He was subsequently prosecuted for a murder he did not commit and condemned to death by hanging. This spectacle cemented Kepe as a martyr in the hearts and minds of the marginalized and poor indigenous population. The journalist's captivating re-imagining, paints a portrait of a divisive, almost mystical outlaw - relentlessly hunted by the Colonial Republic, elusive even to his loved ones, all whilst remaining a champion of the disenchanted.
Seen through the eyes of those who loved and hated him, Sew the Winter to my Skin dissects the psychosis and existential romantic interpretation of legend and heroism. It is a sweeping, action-adventure epic that explores the effects of colonial displacement that sowed the seeds for one of the most viciously racist, fascist, political regimes in history.
This film is South Africa's entry in the Oscar's foreign-language film category. This is South Africa's first entry by a black director.
Q&A with director Jahmil X. T. Qubeka, producer Layla Swart, actress Kandyse McClure and actor Ezra Mabengeza moderated by Sharon Waxman.
