Seth Meyers Says Trump, Other ‘Wildly Out of Touch’ US Leaders Causing ‘National Political Awakening’ (Video)

Meyers discussed the West Virginia teachers strike and Donald Trump’s terrible economic policies on Monday’s “Late Night”

Seth Meyers spent Monday’s “A Closer Look” segment on “Late Night” talking about the West Virginia teachers strike and the underlying cause of the massive work stoppage: Republican leaders who don’t want to help and are out of touch with normal people to convincingly pretend otherwise.

“What we’re seeing in West Virginia is a microcosm of what’s happening across the country. Working class people are being left behind by an economy increasingly dominated by an elite few and they’re pissed off,” Meyers said.

“That kind of thing is happening in communities across the country. We’re seeing mass action to address everything from health care to gun violence. Meanwhile, in Washington the president has neither the interest nor the ability to address those demands because of the chaos in his own administration. In fact, Trump is apparently so upset about the constant turmoil in his White House he’s lashing out by starting a fight over trade with our allies without even consulting his staff.”

“Late Night” then showed a clip of Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross defending Trump’s new trade tariffs by claiming the price of soup cans, beer cans and cars would be negligibly affected by the tariffs on steel, followed by an old clip of Trump economic adviser Gary Cohn talking about how families will be able to buy new cars with an extra $1,000 in tax savings.

“Every single time Trump’s cabinet of millionaires talks about the price of a car they manage to sound wildly out of touch,” Meyers said, before summing the whole thing up.

“So you’ve got thousands of teachers in one of the most conservative states in the country demanding fair pay and decent healthcare while the people in charge keep proving how wildly out of touch they are. What we’re seeing is a national political awakening. In other words, people across the country are saying…” Meyers trailed off, cueing a clip of West Virginia teachers singing Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It” to end the segment.
